AI Video Editing for YouTube: What We Automate, What We Don't, and Why

Editing is about half of what a video costs us to produce. So I have every reason to replace editors with AI, and I've tried. Here's what AI already does in our YouTube production, where it still fails, and what that means for a founder deciding how to make videos.

Can AI replace video editors?

Not the good ones. Not yet.

Editing is about half of what a video costs us to produce. So I have every reason to try. AI can cut silences, add captions, find "highlight" moments and even assemble a rough edit. That's real, and it saves time. But a good editor makes hundreds of small decisions: where the joke lands, when to hold a pause, which take sounds more honest, what B-roll makes the point clearer. That's taste.

What AI does replace is the editor who only does mechanical work. If the whole job is "cut the pauses and add subtitles", that job is going away.

What does AI do in our YouTube production today?

TaskAI's roleWho decides
Transcriptsalmost fully automaticthe editor checks names and terms
Script skeletona first draft from the founder's voice notethe producer, then the founder in their own words
Titlesmany options fastthe producer
Description, chapters, tagsa draft from the transcriptthe account manager edits
Shorts metadatatitles, descriptions and tags for each clipthe account manager
Captionsauto captions in the editing appthe editor fixes mistakes

For SEO, our routine is simple: the video's transcript goes into an AI prompt ("act as a YouTube SEO specialist: write the title, description, timestamps and tags"), and a person edits the result. More in YouTube SEO services.

A real example from my own work: my free Business YouTube Playbook was first assembled by AI from the transcripts of my long videos. It saved days. Then I rewrote a lot of it, because the first version sounded like a robot who'd read my transcripts. Which it was.

Where does AI still fail?

I tested the "AI cuts your Shorts" tools, like Opus Clip. You upload a long video, it finds moments, cuts them and adds captions. In practice the captions had mistakes and the moments were weak. I paid for the tool and then spent more time reviewing its cuts than an editor would spend making them. Simple automation, like one-click auto captions in CapCut, works well. Choosing the moment doesn't, yet.

  • Taste. Which take is better, which joke stays, which story to cut.
  • Context. Without your stories and clients, AI gives the same intro and the same structure as every other channel.
  • Facts. AI invents numbers and studies with full confidence. Someone has to check.
  • Packaging. AI loves to put the same words in the title and on the thumbnail. Wasted space.
AI is a tool inside a system. The free Business YouTube Playbook shows the whole system: strategy, filming, editing, packaging. No opt-ins.

What should never be handed to AI?

  1. Your expertise. AI knows what everyone on the internet says about your field. It doesn't know your clients' stories.
  2. Your face and voice. Buyers of expensive services trust a person. We never change a founder's face with AI.
  3. The final check. Every AI draft gets a human edit before it goes out.

And on labels: YouTube only requires the AI label for realistic synthetic content, like a real person saying something they didn't say. AI for scripts, titles, thumbnails, captions or non-realistic graphics doesn't need it.

What does this mean for a founder?

If you're deciding how to make videos, don't build your plan around an AI editor. Build it around a person with taste who uses AI to go faster. When you hire, check in the paid trial how they use AI and whether they still make the creative decisions. Here's how to hire a YouTube editor, and what good editing looks like in YouTube video editing for business.

Your part stays the same with or without AI: your ideas, your face, one filming day a month. The rest is what our YouTube production team does, with AI where it helps and people where it matters.

FAQ

Will AI replace video editors?

Not good ones, not yet. AI already replaces mechanical work like removing silences, transcribing and adding captions. The decisions that keep people watching, like what to cut, which take sounds honest and what to show, still need an editor with taste.

What can AI do in YouTube production today?

In Evgeny Maximov's agency, AI helps with transcripts, the first skeleton of a script, title and description drafts, chapters and tags from the transcript, Shorts metadata, auto captions and ideas for thumbnails. A person reviews everything before it goes out.

Are AI clipping tools good for cutting Shorts?

In Evgeny Maximov's test of tools like Opus Clip, the captions had mistakes and the chosen moments were weak, so reviewing the AI cuts took longer than having an editor cut them. Simple automation, like auto captions in CapCut, works well.

Can AI write YouTube scripts for a business?

AI can draft a skeleton. Without your stories, opinions and client cases, it writes the same thing as everyone else. Use it for structure, then add what only you know.

Do I need to label AI-edited videos on YouTube?

Only realistic synthetic content needs the label, like a real person saying something they didn't say or a fake real event. AI used for scripts, titles, thumbnails, captions or non-realistic graphics doesn't.

Can an AI avatar replace the founder on camera?

Technically yes, but for high-ticket trust it's risky. Buyers want to see and hear the real person they'll work with. Evgeny Maximov's agency doesn't replace or change the founder's face with AI.

Does AI make YouTube production cheaper?

It makes the editors and producers faster, mostly on boring tasks. It doesn't remove the biggest cost, which is skilled editing and the decisions around it.

What are the most common AI mistakes in YouTube content?

Generic scripts that sound smooth and say nothing, the same words on the thumbnail and in the title, invented numbers and studies, and AI text published without a human edit.

Which AI tools are worth using for a business YouTube channel?

A transcription tool, a chat assistant like ChatGPT or Claude for drafts of titles, descriptions and chapters from the transcript, and the auto-caption feature of your editing app. Expensive all-in-one AI editors rarely pay off for long expert videos.

Should I hire editors who use AI?

Yes. Editors who use AI for the boring parts become faster, not unnecessary. In a paid trial, check how they use it and whether they still make the creative decisions themselves.
