YouTube Chapters: How to Add Them, Fix Them and Name Them for Search

Chapters split a video into named sections on the progress bar. For viewers, they're navigation. For a business channel, they're also one of the cheapest ways to get found in search and cited by Google's AI answers.

How do you add chapters to a YouTube video?

In the description, add a list of timestamps with a name after each one. Here are the first chapters of my 70-minute Business YouTube Playbook:

Chapters example
00:00 How to start a YouTube channel for your business
01:13 B2C vs B2B YouTube: reach vs trust
03:07 The only 3 things a business channel needs
05:01 What you can delegate — and what you can't
07:48 Mistake #1: waiting for the perfect setup
10:07 Mistake #2: chasing views on your first videos

The video has 33 chapters. Each one is a small title someone might search.

The rules

  • The first timestamp is 00:00.
  • At least three timestamps.
  • Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
  • Timestamps go in order.

YouTube can also create automatic chapters, but they don't always appear and their names are generic. Set them yourself.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

Usually one of these:

  • The first timestamp isn't 00:00.
  • Fewer than three timestamps.
  • A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds.
  • A formatting problem: extra characters before the timestamp, or timestamps not in order.
  • Automatic chapters are turned off and there are no manual ones.

Fix the list and save. It can take a little time to update.

How should you name chapters?

Like small titles. Each chapter should make sense on its own, even to someone who never saw the rest of the video.

Why do chapters matter for AI search?

Google can show chapters as key moments in search results. And AI search is starting to cite videos section by section. In OtterlyAI's 2026 study of AI citations, videos with timestamps were often cited more than once, usually across two to five chapters, and most timestamped citations appeared in Google AI Overviews.

For a business, that means one 20-minute video can be the answer to five different questions.

When should you use chapters?

On every long video over about 8 minutes. On Shorts, no. On podcasts and masterclasses, always: viewers come back to specific parts, and a long video without chapters is a wall. Chapters, titles and descriptions are part of every video in our YouTube channel management.

FAQ

How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?

Add timestamps to the video description, starting with 00:00, with at least three chapters that are each at least 10 seconds long, listed in order with a short name after each timestamp. Save, and YouTube turns them into chapters on the progress bar.

Why are my YouTube chapters not working?

Common reasons: the first timestamp isn't 00:00, there are fewer than three timestamps, a chapter is shorter than 10 seconds, or the timestamps are out of order or badly formatted. Fix the list and save; the update can take a little time.

Do YouTube chapters help SEO?

They help discovery: Google can show chapters as key moments in search results, and AI search tools can cite individual chapters. Descriptive chapter names also tell YouTube more about what the video covers.

What should I name YouTube chapters?

Short, descriptive names that match what people search, often phrased as questions or clear statements. Avoid generic names like Intro, Problem #1 or Part 2: they say nothing to a viewer or to search.

Does YouTube create chapters automatically?

YouTube can generate automatic chapters for some videos, but they don't always appear and their names are generic. Manual chapters give you control over where each section starts and what it's called.

Should Shorts have chapters?

No. Chapters are for long videos. Evgeny Maximov's agency adds them to every long video over about 8 minutes, and always to podcasts and masterclasses.

How many chapters should a video have?

At least three, and as many as there are clear topics. A 20-minute video often has five to eight. Evgeny Maximov's 70-minute Business YouTube Playbook has 33 chapters.

Can I add chapters to a video that's already published?

Yes. Edit the description of the published video, add the timestamp list starting with 00:00, and save. Old videos with real search demand are a good place to start.

Where do I add chapters in YouTube Studio?

Open YouTube Studio, go to Content, click the video, and paste the timestamp list into the Description field on the Details page. Then save.

How do I write timestamps for a video longer than an hour?

Use hours, minutes and seconds, for example 1:05:30. Keep the first timestamp as 00:00 and keep the list in order.

Do chapters hurt watch time?

Chapters let some viewers skip ahead, but they also keep people who would otherwise leave because they can't find the part they came for. For long business videos and masterclasses, the trade is worth it: viewers find their answer on your video instead of someone else's.
