What Does a YouTube Producer Do? The Role That Runs a Business Channel

Most founders hire an editor first and wonder why the channel still depends on them. The missing person is usually the producer: the one who decides what to film, writes the plan, briefs the team and says "this is boring, redo it". Here's what that job really includes.

Why do founders need a producer, not just an editor?

Here's the usual story. A founder records a few videos, does everything alone, gets tired and hires an editor. Editing is the most time-consuming job, so it feels like a big relief. Two months later the channel is stuck again.

Because behind every video there are seven jobs: ideas and research, scripts, filming, editing, thumbnails and titles, publishing and SEO, distribution and analytics. The editor took one. The founder still decides every topic, writes every script, checks every cut and figures out what to post next. The producer is the person who takes that load.

What does a YouTube producer do, day to day?

In our agency, this is the producer's job description, in the order the work happens:

  1. The content plan. Topics for the month in Notion, based on research, the founder's ideas and what worked before. The client approves it.
  2. Scripts. One-page anchor scripts with key points and questions, not word-for-word text. The input is often a 2–3 minute voice note from the founder. Here's our script template.
  3. The filming day. Agreeing the date before the scripts are even finished, then sitting behind the camera and asking questions so the founder forgets the camera.
  4. Briefs for the editor and designer. The script, the brand book, references with notes on what to take from each one, the raw footage and any special wishes.
  5. Review. Watching every edit before the client sees it. If a part is boring, it goes back with timecodes.
  6. Titles, thumbnails and SEO. Usually three title options for a long video, developed together with the thumbnail, and A/B tests once the channel has enough views.
  7. Client service. One chat, one person. The founder doesn't talk to five team members.
  8. Analytics. What worked, what didn't, what to make next.

How is a producer different from an editor and a channel manager?

RoleOwnsDoesn't own
Producer (creative director)what to make, scripts, briefs, review, packaging, analyticsthe edit itself, uploading
Editorturning footage into a show: cuts, sound, music, B-roll, graphicstopics, scripts, strategy
Channel manager (account manager)quality control before you see anything, uploading, descriptions, chapters, repostingstrategy, the content itself
Thumbnail designerthe thumbnailthe title (that's the producer)

On a small channel one creative director can cover a lot: film, edit, make thumbnails, and bring in other people when needed. On a bigger one, the producer manages the team. The full picture is in the 7 roles behind every client.

How do you measure a YouTube producer?

Not by views. On a business channel, a video with a thousand views from the right people can bring a client. We measure our producers on three things:

  • Videos are published on time.
  • The channel grows: watch time, subscribers from the right audience, inquiries that mention videos.
  • The client is happy: we ask every quarter, and we aim for 9 out of 10 or higher.

The third one matters more than people think. A producer who hits every deadline but makes the founder feel unheard won't keep the client.

Why does the producer need to be the founder's only contact?

Because otherwise the founder becomes the project manager. The producer is the filter between the client and the production team. Editors and designers don't sit in the client's chat, except in special cases. Feedback from the founder goes to the producer, and the producer turns it into tasks.

This is also why the weekly team call can run without the founder. I'm the owner of my agency, and sometimes I miss our Friday call because I have a sales call or a filming day. The system works without me. That's the goal for your channel too. More in our content production workflow.

How much does a YouTube producer cost?

There's no clean data for "YouTube producer" yet. As a benchmark, Indeed shows the average content producer salary in the US at about $75,000 a year (September 2026). Senior producers in big cities earn more. Add hiring time, tools, and the fact that one producer needs an editor and a designer to produce anything.

That's why many founders rent the role first. In an agency, the producer comes together with the editors, designer and account manager, usually for about $3,000–10,000 a month for the whole team. The math is in YouTube video production cost.

How do you hire a YouTube producer?

The same way we hire every role: a job post, hard filters, several interviews and a paid trial week with two or three finalists. For a producer, look for someone who has run a channel, not only edited for one. In the interview, ask them to break down a channel in your niche: what they'd keep, what they'd change and what they'd film first. The full method is in the paid trial week.

And if you'd rather skip hiring, our producer runs your channel as part of YouTube production for founders. You film one day a month.

FAQ

What does a YouTube producer do?

A YouTube producer runs the channel's content: plans the topics for the month, writes or outlines scripts, briefs editors and designers, reviews every edit before the client sees it, works on titles, SEO and A/B tests, and reads the analytics to decide what's next. In Evgeny Maximov's agency, the producer is also the client's main contact.

What is the difference between a YouTube producer and a video editor?

The editor turns footage into a finished video. The producer decides which videos to make, what goes into them, briefs the editor and judges whether the result is good enough. One editor covers one of the seven jobs behind a video; the producer connects all of them.

What is the difference between a YouTube producer and a channel manager?

The producer owns strategy and content. The channel manager, or account manager, owns quality control and publishing: uploads, descriptions, chapters, subtitles and reposting. Small channels often combine both roles in one person.

Is a YouTube producer the same as a creative director?

Mostly yes. In the US and Europe the role is often called creative director or creative producer. Evgeny Maximov's agency calls it YouTube producer. The job is the same: the person responsible for the channel and the team.

How much does a YouTube producer make?

There's no clean public data for YouTube producers specifically. Indeed lists the average content producer salary in the US at about $75,000 a year (September 2026), with senior producers earning more in big cities.

When does a founder need a YouTube producer?

When you have an editor but still decide every topic, write every script and review every video yourself. If the channel stops whenever you're busy, you need a producer, either hired or as part of an agency.

How do you measure a YouTube producer's work?

In Evgeny Maximov's agency the producer is judged on three things: videos published on time, the channel's growth, and client satisfaction measured every quarter (an NPS of 9 out of 10 or higher). Views alone are not the goal on a business channel.

Can the founder be the YouTube producer?

At the start, yes, and many founders are. But it's the most time-consuming role after editing, so it's usually the first one worth handing over once the channel proves it brings clients.

Does a YouTube producer write scripts?

Usually yes, or at least the outline. In Evgeny Maximov's agency the producer writes one-page anchor scripts with key points and questions, built from the founder's voice notes, not word-for-word text.

Does a YouTube producer attend the filming day?

On a business channel, yes. The producer sits behind the camera, asks questions and keeps the energy up, so the founder talks to a person instead of a lens.
