How to Choose a B2B Marketing Agency: Types, Prices, Questions and Red Flags

Every B2B marketing agency says it drives pipeline. They sell very different jobs at very different prices. Here is how the types differ, what 2026 public guides say about cost, ten questions to ask before you sign, and the red flags that should end the call.

What kinds of B2B marketing agencies are there?

When you search for a B2B marketing agency, you find five different businesses under one name. Each sells a different job. I don't rank them. I describe what they do and who they fit.

TypeWhat you getTypical public price (2026)Fits best if
Full-service or go-to-market agencystrategy plus several channels: website, content, SEO, email, ads, reportingabout $5,000–10,000 a month for multi-channel demand generation; $10,000–30,000+ for full go-to-marketyou want one team to run many channels and have nobody to manage vendors

The video row combines our own price ($3,000+ a month) with public prices of video companies in YouTube production companies compared. All sources are agencies that sell these services. Treat the numbers as direction, not as a quote. Checked in October 2026.

The first three buy capacity and thinking. The fourth ties part of the price to results. The fifth builds trust earlier in the process and keeps working in search. Most firms end up mixing two of them. If you are not sure that you even need an agency, read fractional CMO vs agency vs in-house first.

How do B2B marketing agencies charge?

The price is one thing. The way it is built is another, and the model changes how the agency behaves.

Pricing modelTypical rangeGood forWatch out for

For scale, the Gartner 2025 CMO Spend Survey found marketing budgets at 7.7% of company revenue on average. Most of its 402 respondents were at companies with over $1 billion in revenue, so use it as a ceiling check, not as a target. For a $30 million firm, 7.7% is about $2.3 million a year, and a $10,000 monthly retainer is about $120,000 of that. For your own number, read how much to spend on marketing.

The question that matters more than the price: what is one new client worth to you? If a client brings $30,000 or more, one extra client a quarter can pay for a good retainer. Use the break-even calculator with your own deal size.

What should you ask a B2B marketing agency before you sign?

Send the same list to every agency and ask for answers in writing. Then compare them side by side.

  • Which clients do you have with my deal size and my kind of buyer? May I speak to two of them?
  • Who will do the work, and who is on this call? Will they be on my account?
  • What will you do in the first 30, 60 and 90 days?
  • What do you report: leads, qualified meetings, pipeline, signed clients? Which of these can you see in my CRM?
  • How do you count what brought a lead? Do you accept that I will ask every lead "how did you hear about us?"
  • What do you need from me each week, in hours?
  • Who owns the domain, ad accounts, analytics, email lists and content? What happens to them if I leave?
  • How is the price built, and what is extra (ad spend, tools, design, revisions)?
  • What is the minimum term and how do I leave?
  • What would make you say my firm is not a fit?

The last question is my favorite. A good agency can name the clients it does not want. And the fifth question is simple but rare: a buyer who writes down "how did you hear about us?" will always catch a report that says "100 leads" when sales saw five.

What are the red flags?

  • Guarantees. "Your site on the first page of Google in 60 days" or "20 leads a month". It can happen, but usually it does not. Nobody controls Google or your market. Most often it is a marketing trick with an asterisk: the conditions show up later, in the contract.
  • A senior pitch and a junior team. The people on the sales call never touch your account.
  • Reports without pipeline. Impressions, traffic and followers only. B2B sales cycles are long, so ask for qualified meetings and signed clients as well.
  • The agency owns your assets. Domain, ad accounts, analytics or your video channel under their login.
  • Long contracts with no exit. Twelve months or more with fees for leaving.
  • Case studies with no numbers and no names. Or only logos. Ask what changed and by how much.
  • No questions about your sales. If the agency never asks about your close rate, deal size or sales process, it plans to sell you traffic.
  • The same plan for everyone. Generic content that could be about any firm.

For video agencies I wrote the list separately in how to spot a scam YouTube agency.

How do you run the selection, step by step?

  1. Write a one-page brief. Your goal in signed clients, your deal size, what you have tried, what the sales process looks like, your budget range.
  2. Shortlist three agencies. Not ten. More than three only makes you slow.
  3. Send everyone the same brief and ask for a 90-day plan, a price and the answers to the ten questions.
  4. Score them. Use the table below, and give each line 1 to 5.
  5. Call two clients of your top choice. Ask what the agency did when something went wrong.
  6. Start with a short first term and a written list of what you will review at day 90.

Where do content and video fit when you pick an agency?

Most B2B agencies run channels: SEO, ads, email, LinkedIn, a website. Very few produce long video that your sales team can send to a lead. That is a gap, because a long video works like a sales presentation: it warms the lead before the call, builds trust, raises conversion and helps you win better deals on better terms.

Our closest proof is Tvoy Sklad, a self-storage franchise. We have worked with them since 2022 and made more than 700 videos. The founder is the face of the channel, and he shows the financial models himself, in videos and live streams. Partners join the call and say they have already watched everything. In 2024 and 2025 the company raised about $5 million from investors and signed more than 20 franchisees. The full story is in the Tvoy Sklad case study. This is one client in one field. It shows the mechanism, not a promise for your firm.

If you need ads or a CRM setup, hire a specialist. We don't run paid ads or manage ad accounts. We run YouTube and social media organically for experts and founders. That is the whole offer, and I would rather say it before the call than after.

How do we sell, so you can compare?

You ask agencies to be clear, so here is our process. A 20–30 minute call. If you look like a fit, I send a free analysis of your niche: what already works on YouTube, which topics have demand, and whether it makes sense at all. If the numbers in your niche are too small, I tell you not to buy. On the second call you get a proposal with two or three options. Prices start from $3,000 a month for done-for-you, from $500 for one-off work. We guarantee one thing: 7 days of money back. We promise no views, calls or clients. I compared six video companies by their public prices, with ourselves last, in YouTube production companies compared.

Which videos help you choose an agency?

Videos about choosing an agency are mostly short and made by agencies. I picked four that give a clear list. Three are small, and one is above 10,000 views. Views show demand, not how many clients a video brought. Data is from YouTube on 26 October 2026.

Four videos on choosing a B2B marketing agency: 8 key factors by Matrix Bricks, 11K views; 7 things to keep in mind by Mindful Leaders, 5K; questions to ask by Maria Keiser, 2K; B2B consulting questions by Directive, 850

Notice who made them: agencies. A named buyer or consultant who explains how they chose and what they would do differently is rare. That is room for an expert in any niche. I wrote how to use it in consulting marketing.

What is the short version?

Pick the job, then the type, then three agencies, then compare them with the same brief. Check the proof from your niche, who does the work, what you own, and how they report. Start small. If the problem is that your expert has no time to make content, a B2B YouTube agency is the specialist for it. If it is anything else, I'll tell you who to hire instead.

FAQ

How do I choose a B2B marketing agency?

Start with the job, not the agency: which channel or problem do you need help with? Then shortlist three agencies, give them the same one-page brief, compare proposals in a scorecard, call two of their clients, and start with a short first term. Prefer proof from your niche and deal size.

How much does a B2B marketing agency cost?

Public 2026 guides put most B2B retainers at about $2,500–15,000 a month. Multi-channel demand generation is about $5,000–10,000, and a full go-to-market program can be $10,000–30,000 or more. Ad spend is usually extra, and these guides come from agencies, so treat them as direction.

What should I ask a B2B marketing agency before hiring?

Ask who will do the work, which clients in your niche and deal size they have, what they report (pipeline and signed clients, not only clicks), who owns your accounts and assets, what the first 90 days look like, how you can leave, and what would make them say your firm is not a fit.

What are red flags in a B2B marketing agency?

Guaranteed rankings, leads or revenue, a senior pitch and a junior team, reports without pipeline numbers, the agency owning your domain or ad accounts, long contracts with no exit, and case studies with no numbers or names. Any of these should stop the conversation.

Should I choose a full-service or a specialist B2B agency?

Choose a specialist if you know the gap, such as SEO, email or video. Choose full-service if you need several channels run by one team and have nobody to manage separate vendors. Full-service costs more and can be thinner in each channel.

What pricing model is best for a B2B marketing agency?

A flat monthly retainer fits ongoing work. Projects fit one-time jobs like a website. A percentage of ad spend, usually 10–20%, gives the agency a reason to raise your ad budget. A base fee plus a payment per qualified meeting can work if both sides define a qualified meeting in writing.

How long should a contract with a marketing agency be?

Short enough that you can leave if it does not work. Many buyers start with a three-month first term or a month-to-month plan after a short setup. Be careful with twelve months or more and no exit clause, and check what happens to your accounts when you leave.

Is a B2B marketing agency worth it for a small firm?

It can be, if one new client is worth thousands of dollars and you lack the time to run marketing yourself. If a deal is small and you need clients next month, a retainer is a risk. Run the break-even math first, with your own deal size.

Do B2B marketing agencies make video?

Some do, but most focus on SEO, ads, email and design. Video agencies specialize in planning, filming, editing and publishing long videos and Shorts. Evgeny Maximov's agency does this for experts and founders with high-ticket services, from $3,000 a month, and does not run paid ads.

How do I know if the agency is working?

Ask every new lead how they heard about you and write the answer down. Compare it with the agency's reports. If the agency says it brought 100 leads and your sales calls show 5 new clients who mention something else, trust the sales calls.

Should I hire an agency or a fractional CMO first?

If nobody owns your marketing plan and numbers, a fractional CMO comes first, because an agency without direction produces activity. If the plan is clear and you lack capacity, hire the agency. Many companies use both.
