# YouTube Shorts for Business: What They Do, What They Don't, and How to Use Them

Shorts bring strangers. Long videos turn strangers into buyers. Here's how we use Shorts for founders, and why we cut five clips from a video when we could cut fifteen.

By **Evgeny Maximov** · 9 min read · 8 Oct 2026

**Key takeaways**

**Short answer:** YouTube Shorts are good for business as a **reach** tool, not as the main way to get clients. Shorts bring strangers; long videos turn them into buyers. The best Shorts for a founder are cut from long videos, about five per 15-minute video, each linked back to the long one.

- Clips amplify. Long-form sells. Make the long video first.
- Five good clips beat fifteen average ones.
- A Short is cut, not found: one moment, a hook plate, captions, a punchline.
- Small things like posting by hand can triple views.

## Are YouTube Shorts good for business?

Yes, for one job: reach. People see your face, hear one idea and remember you. That's valuable. But a $10,000 buyer rarely decides after 40 seconds.

| | Shorts | Long videos |
|---|---|---|
| **Job** | reach and recognition | trust and calls |
| **Who watches** | strangers scrolling | people with the problem |
| **What to measure** | views, new viewers, clicks to the long video | watch time, comments from buyers, booked calls |
| **Where they come from** | cut from long videos, talks, podcasts | your filming day |

Some agencies sell you billions of views from clips. But clips need a source. Somebody has to say something worth clipping, and that's the long video.

Clips amplify. Long-form sells.

## Why should long videos come before Shorts?

Because they feed each other, and the long video feeds first. Our client Ayuna is the clearest example. At the start, her Shorts on YouTube got 1,000 to 3,000 views. Then her long videos came out. One Short grew from about 1,500 to about 15,000 views, ten times more, after the long videos took off.

On Instagram it's the same story. Clips cut from her long videos reach up to about 300,000 views, more than the reels she used to film on her iPhone.

## How many Shorts should you cut from one long video?

About five good ones from a 15-minute video. We could cut fifteen. Ten of them would be bad. And a bad Short doesn't just get no views. It teaches the algorithm the wrong audience.

So the math for a founder is: four long videos a month, about twenty Shorts. One long video becomes a week of content on every platform.

![One long video becomes about five clips, a LinkedIn post, an email and an article over one week](https://evgenymaximov.com/img/fig-waterfall.webp)One long video, one week of content

Who picks the moments: a person or an AI tool? A person. AI can do the rough cut, but a clippable moment needs taste: a strong first sentence, one idea, an emotion. And record what you already do. One 30-minute talk gave us 21 Shorts. One podcast episode usually gives 8 to 12 good ones.

## How do you cut a YouTube Short from a long video?

A Short is cut, not found. This is the recipe we give our editors.

![The clip recipe: pick one moment, a hook plate in the first 3 seconds, vertical with the face in the center, captions that read on a phone, end on the punchline, a short subscribe animation and a Related video link](https://evgenymaximov.com/img/fig-clip-recipe.webp)The clip recipe: six steps from a long video to a Short

1. **Pick one moment.** One idea that makes sense without the long video. 20–60 seconds.
2. **A hook plate in the first 3 seconds.** The topic in 3–6 words on top. Start on the strongest line and cut the “so, um”.
3. **Vertical, face in the center.** A punch-in on every key phrase. Show the document or number when it's mentioned.
4. **Captions that read on a phone.** Big, one to three words at a time, the key word in your brand color. Never over the face and never under the app buttons.
5. **End on the punchline.** No “that's it, guys”. The last line should make them watch again.
6. **A 1–2 second subscribe animation**, then publish with a **Related video** link to the long one. That link is the bridge from a stranger to a binger.

And keep the answer for the end. Same rule as long videos: give the answer in the first second and they swipe.

## How do you sell with a Short without being pushy?

Most Shorts should just be good. Some should sell. Not a call, but a small next step. Our structure has five steps:

Shared enemy“Posting every week and still zero sales calls?”
→
No blame“It's not you. The algorithm rewards views, not buyers.”
→
Simple fix“Just…”
→
Bigger problem“But that's only half of it…”
→
Call to actionInstagram: “Comment PLAN and I'll send it to you.” YouTube: subscribe, share, answer a question

The enemy is always the system, never a person or a client.

**The last step depends on the platform.** “Comment PLAN and I'll send it” works only on **Instagram**, where a chatbot replies to the comment and sends the link automatically. On YouTube there's no such automation, so keep the call simple:

- subscribe, if you want the next video like this;
- send it to a friend who needs it;
- answer a question in the comments: “What's your biggest problem with…?”

And one rule for the Instagram version: the free thing has to be something ChatGPT can't give in five minutes. A real document, a real plan, from real clients. Otherwise nobody comments twice.

## How do you post Shorts so people actually see them?

The same video can get three times more views, or three times fewer, because of small things.

One client's Instagram reels dropped to 40–60 views. Before that, clips from the client's long videos did 5,000 to 75,000. So we tested it for five days: one reel posted by hand in the morning, one scheduled for the evening. Result: the scheduled reels got **3,709** views. The ones posted by hand got **12,399**. Why? Honestly, I don't know. I only know the numbers. So we post by hand.

- One person owns repurposing and posting. On our team it's a separate role.
- Native on each platform: vertical, captions, a first line of text.
- Captions readable on a phone and not hidden under the interface.
- Every Short links to its long video with Related video.
- Test posting by hand against scheduling on your own account.

## So should your business make Shorts?

Yes, but not instead of long videos. Make one long video, cut about five clips, link each one back, and post them natively by hand. That's how a founder shows up everywhere without filming every day. If you're thinking “holy crap, that's twenty posts a month on five platforms”, that's exactly the part my team does. You film one day, we turn it into a month.

## FAQ

**Are YouTube Shorts good for business?**

Yes, as a reach tool, not as the main sales tool. Shorts help strangers see your face and remember you, while long videos build the trust that leads to a call. Evgeny Maximov's agency cuts Shorts from clients' long videos so one filming day covers both jobs.

**Should a business post Shorts or long videos first?**

Long videos first. A Short needs a source: somebody has to say something worth clipping. Ayuna's Shorts on YouTube sat at 1,000–3,000 views until her long videos came out; then one grew from about 1,500 to about 15,000 views.

**How many Shorts should I cut from one long video?**

About five good clips from a 15-minute video. You could cut fifteen, but ten would be weak, and weak Shorts teach the algorithm the wrong audience. Four long videos a month give about twenty Shorts.

**How long should a YouTube Short for business be?**

20–60 seconds, built around one idea that makes sense without the long video. Start on the strongest line in the first three seconds and end on the punchline.

**Can AI tools clip my long videos into Shorts?**

AI can do the rough cut, but a person with taste should pick the moments. AI clipping tools produce many clips quickly, and most are not worth posting. A strong first sentence, one idea and an emotion are what make a moment clippable.

**Do YouTube Shorts bring clients?**

Rarely on their own. Shorts bring reach and recognition; clients usually come after they watch long videos, case studies or a masterclass. Link every Short to its long video with the Related video feature so viewers can go deeper.

**What makes a good Short for a founder?**

One moment, a 3–6 word hook plate on top, vertical framing with the face in the center, big captions readable on a phone, and a punchline at the end. Show the document or number on screen when it's mentioned.

**How do I sell with a Short without being pushy?**

Use five steps: name a shared enemy (the system, not a person), say it's not the viewer's fault, give one simple fix, show the bigger problem, then end with a call to action. On Instagram, where chatbots send the link automatically, that can be a keyword ("comment PLAN"); on YouTube, keep it simple: subscribe, send it to a friend, or answer a question in the comments.

**Should I schedule Shorts and Reels or post them by hand?**

Test it on your account. On one client's Instagram, Evgeny Maximov's team posted one reel by hand and one through scheduling every day for five days: the hand-posted reels got 12,399 views, the scheduled ones 3,709.

**Who should run Shorts for a business?**

One person who owns repurposing and posting on every platform, so clips are native for each one. In Evgeny Maximov's agency this is a separate role, not an extra task for the editor.

**Can I make Shorts from talks and podcasts?**

Yes, they are some of the best sources. One 30-minute talk gave Evgeny Maximov 21 Shorts, and one podcast episode usually gives 8–12 good ones.
