# How to Hire a YouTube Scriptwriter for a Business Channel (Brief, Test, Rates)

A scriptwriter who writes great videos for creators can write terrible ones for a founder. The job on a business channel is different: translate an expert's knowledge into simple language and leave room for the founder to sound like themselves. Here's how we write scripts, what to ask a writer for, and what it costs.

**Key takeaways**

**Short answer:** to hire a YouTube scriptwriter for a business channel, look for someone who can turn your expertise into a simple one-page structure (a 30-second hook, 3–5 blocks with key points and questions, 2–3 calls to action) and who builds it from your voice notes and cases, not from AI alone. Give a paid test on a real topic. Market rates in 2026 run from about $75–600 per script with freelancers to about $1,000 for a deeply researched long-form script. A typical long video script costs about $200–1,000.

- A business script translates expert language into simple language.
- One page of key points beats word-for-word text for most founders.
- Your voice note is the best raw material.
- The script is about a third of the result. Don't overpay for perfect prose.

## What does a scriptwriter do on a business channel?

The founder is the expert. The writer usually isn't. And that's the point. A good scriptwriter puts on the "beginner's hat" and asks the questions a client would ask: how much does it cost, how long does it take, what are the options, what can go wrong. Then they translate the expert's answers from complicated to simple.

A writer who's great at creator content can be wrong for you. Creator scripts chase attention. A business script has to build trust with a buyer who's about to spend thousands of dollars.

## What does a good business YouTube script look like?

In our agency, a 10-minute video fits on one page. It's an anchor script, not a word-for-word text:

1. **The hook**, written out, 3–5 sentences, under 30 seconds: a pain, a myth, a mistake or a short story. Never "Hi, I'm…, 14 years of experience, here's my book".
2. **A short greeting** after the hook, with one or two facts that matter for this topic.
3. **3–5 blocks.** Each has a thesis, the key points and a few questions to talk around. "10 mistakes" means 10 blocks.
4. **2–3 calls to action:** a light one after the first blocks, the main one near the end, and a next video or a call at the finish.

The full template, ready to copy, is in [how to write a YouTube script](https://evgenymaximov.com/blog/youtube-script-template/). Hook examples are in [YouTube hooks for business](https://evgenymaximov.com/blog/youtube-hook-examples/).

How detailed should it be? It depends on the speaker. A founder who struggles to put thoughts into words gets complete sentences. A strong speaker gets questions and directions, and talks freely around them.

## Where does the content of a script come from?

This is where most writers fail. They open ChatGPT, get a generic outline, and the founder has to rewrite it. Our writers collect material first, from four sources:

- **Simple questions**, like at a consultation or a friend asking over dinner.
- **Timecodes of the top videos** on the topic, to see what people already care about.
- **Search and articles**, for fact-heavy topics.
- **The expert's own material:** cases, before-and-after stories, posts, and a 2–3 minute voice note on the topic.

Then we "feed it pre-chewed". It's much easier for a founder to cut what's wrong and add their own story than to write from zero. AI is fine for the first skeleton ([here's where we use AI in production](https://evgenymaximov.com/blog/ai-video-editing/)). The stories, opinions and client cases have to be yours.

## What should you give a scriptwriter?

- The topic and who the video is for.
- A voice note from you, 2–3 minutes, with what you'd say about it.
- Links to your past videos, posts or website, so they learn your words.
- One or two cases or stories you want in the video.
- Where the video should send people: a next video, a lead magnet or a call.

And what not to expect: the script doesn't direct the edit. B-roll and graphics are the editor's decision. If the video needs something from your expertise, like a document or a client result, you send it to the team.

## How do you test a scriptwriter?

Pay for a test. Give two or three candidates the same real topic from your content plan and the same voice note. Then check:

- Does it sound like you, or like a blog post?
- Does the hook work out loud in under 30 seconds?
- Are there real questions and your stories in the blocks?
- Could you film it today without rewriting?

The winner is usually obvious. We use the same approach for every role: [the paid trial week](https://evgenymaximov.com/blog/paid-trial-week-hiring/).

## What are the red flags?

| 🚩 Red flag | ✅ Green flag |
|---|---|
| The hook starts with "Hi, I'm…" | The hook starts with a pain, a myth or a story |
| Reads like an article | Reads like something you'd say |
| Same voice for every client | Uses your words and your cases |
| Pure AI text, nobody edited it | AI for the skeleton, human for the rest |
| Never asks you a question | Asks "how much, how long, what if" before writing |

## How much does a YouTube scriptwriter cost?

Rates vary a lot, and there's no official survey. Public guides and price lists in 2026 show roughly:

| Type | Typical price |
|---|---|
| **Freelancer, 5–10 minute video** | about $75–300 per script |
| **Freelancer, 15–30 minute video** | about $200–600 per script |
| **Per word, experienced YouTube writers** | about $0.07–0.13 a word, often $300–600 a script |
| **Researched long-form script** | about $200–1,000, depending on research and the writer's level |

Remember that the script is roughly a third of the result. The rest is you, the edit, the topic and the niche. So don't pay for perfect prose. Pay for a writer who knows your buyer.

In our agency, the producer writes the scripts and also sits behind the camera on the filming day, so nothing gets lost between paper and camera. That's part of [YouTube production for founders](https://evgenymaximov.com/services/youtube-production/).

## FAQ

**What does a YouTube scriptwriter do for a business channel?**

On a business channel, the scriptwriter turns the founder's expertise into a simple structure: a hook for the first 30 seconds, 3–5 blocks with the key points and questions, and two or three calls to action. In Evgeny Maximov's agency this is usually a one-page anchor script, not word-for-word text.

**How much does a YouTube scriptwriter cost?**

In 2026, market rates vary widely: about $75–300 for a 5–10 minute script and $200–600 for a 15–30 minute script from freelancers, and up to about $1,000 for a deeply researched long-form script. Per-word rates of roughly $0.07–0.13 are common among experienced YouTube writers.

**Should a business YouTube script be written word for word?**

Usually not. Reading a full script sounds robotic for most founders. An anchor script with key points and questions lets the founder speak naturally. Word-for-word scripts make sense for VSLs, documentaries and videos with exact numbers.

**Can AI write YouTube scripts for a business channel?**

AI can draft a skeleton. It can't add your stories, your opinions and your clients' real cases, which are what make a business video trustworthy. Evgeny Maximov's team uses AI only for the first draft of the structure.

**Where does a scriptwriter get material for an expert's video?**

From four sources: simple questions a client would ask at a consultation, timecodes of top videos on the topic, articles and search results, and the expert's own cases, social posts and voice notes. The founder's 2–3 minute voice note on the topic is often the best input.

**How do I test a YouTube scriptwriter before hiring?**

Give a paid test: one script for a real topic from your content plan, based on a voice note from you. Check whether it sounds like you, whether the hook works in 30 seconds and whether you could film it without rewriting.

**How long should a YouTube script be?**

For a 10-minute video, one A4 page of key points is enough. That's the standard in Evgeny Maximov's agency: the founder reads it, adds their thoughts and films.

**What are red flags when hiring a YouTube scriptwriter?**

Scripts that read like blog posts, hooks that start with "Hi, I'm…", no questions or stories in the blocks, the same voice for every client, and AI text without any human editing.

**Does the scriptwriter decide the visuals and editing?**

No. In Evgeny Maximov's agency the script doesn't direct the edit; the editor decides B-roll and graphics. If a video needs visuals from your expertise, like a case or a document, you send them.

**How much of a video's result depends on the script?**

Roughly a third. The rest is the speaker, the edit, the topic and the niche. A great script with a weak topic won't save a video, and a strong expert can make a simple outline work.
